Alert level and per-site alerts

Choose which incidents send alerts for the whole account, then change it for one site or turn that site’s alerts off.

Updated

Every issue a check finds, other than a suggestion, opens an incident. Your alert level decides which of those incidents send an alert. You set it once for the account, and you can change it for one site.

Alert level

Go to Alerts › What and pick one under Send alerts for:

  • Critical only: critical incidents only. Problems that need fixing now.
  • Warnings and critical: warning and critical incidents. Also problems worth a look today.
  • Everything: every incident, info included, such as a changed robots.txt or a new page title.

Alerts are on from the start. A new account is on Warnings and critical, and it comes with an email channel called Email me that sends to the owner, so alerts reach you from day one, once your email address is verified. Add more channels in Alerts › Where.

The level applies to every alert an incident sends: when it opens, when it gets worse, reminders and the resolved alert. The resolved alert is judged by the highest severity the incident reached, so it goes where the alert about the problem went. Suggestions never send an alert at any level.

Per-site alerts

One site can differ from the rest. Open the site’s Settings and find Alerts.

Under Send alerts for, choose:

  • Same as the account: the site follows the account’s level. This is the default.
  • Critical only, Warnings and critical or Everything: the site uses its own level.
  • Off: no alerts from this site to any channel. Email me about this site still sends, since it’s each person’s own.

Under Send them to, choose Every channel or Only these channels and pick at least one. That way, for example, one client’s site can alert only that client’s Slack channel.

Sites with their own settings are listed in Alerts › What, with what each sends and where. The rest follow the account.

Email me about this site

This is your own email about one site, separate from the account’s channels. Only you get it, at your account email address, once that address is verified.

Tick Email me about this site under Your email alerts in the site’s Settings, then pick your own level: Everything, Warnings and critical or Critical only. It starts at Warnings and critical. Your Profile has the same switch for every site you can see, under Site alerts.

  • You get an email when an incident opens, gets worse or is resolved. There are no reminders.
  • While an incident is muted, you only get its resolved email.
  • If the same incident gets worse twice within an hour, you get one email about it, not two. The resolved email is never held back.
  • If an email channel already sends you the same alert, you don’t get it twice.
  • It still works when the site’s alerts are set to Off, since it’s yours rather than the account’s.

Anyone who can see the site can use it, including people who can only view, and people with access to selected sites.

Who can change them

  • The account’s alert level, reminders and each site’s Alerts settings: the owner and people who can edit all sites. People who can view all sites see a site’s Alerts settings read-only on its Settings page; Alerts isn’t in their sidebar. People with access to selected sites don’t see them.
  • Email me about this site: each person, for themselves.
