SEOComet for Slack

SEOComet checks your sites’ robots.txt, sitemaps, ads.txt, uptime, SSL certificates and watched pages on a schedule. Add it to Slack and its alerts go to a channel you pick, next to the rest of your team’s work.

Add to Slack

On Pro and Business. You’ll be asked to log in first.

What an alert in Slack shows

  • The severity, with a red, orange or blue marker
  • What went wrong, in a sentence
  • The site, the check and the SEOComet account
  • For a robots.txt or ads.txt change, up to 10 of the changed lines
  • A View incident button that opens the incident in SEOComet

What SEOComet posts

SEOComet only posts to the channel you picked. Which incidents send an alert depends on your alert level: critical only, warnings and critical, or everything.

  • An alert when a check opens an incident: robots.txt blocks Googlebot or loses its Sitemap line, a sitemap goes missing or shrinks, ads.txt drops seller lines, the site goes down or gets slow, a watched page turns noindex or changes its canonical, or the SSL certificate is close to expiring.
  • An alert when an incident gets worse, for example from warning to critical.
  • A Still open reminder every 4 hours while an incident stays open, if you turn reminders on.
  • A resolved message when the problem is fixed.
  • Google update alerts when Google starts or finishes a core, spam or other ranking update, if you pick the Slack channel under Alerts › Google updates.
  • A test message when you press Send test.

A new account starts on Warnings and critical. You can change it under Alerts › What, and send one site’s alerts to its own Slack channel from that site’s Settings.

How to add SEOComet to Slack

  1. Sign in to SEOComet

Use the account whose alerts you want in Slack. You need to be its owner, or someone who can edit all its sites.

  2. Open Alerts

In the sidebar, open Alerts. Channels are listed under Where.

  3. Choose Add channel

The button sits at the top of the Where list.

  4. Choose Add to Slack

    SEOComet sends you to Slack.

  5. Pick a channel in Slack

Choose the Slack workspace, if you’re in more than one, and the channel the alerts should go to.

  6. Press Allow

Slack sends you back to the Alerts page, where the new channel shows as Slack and the channel’s name. Press Send test to check it works.

No SEOComet account yet? Join the waitlist and we’ll email you when you can sign up. You can also add a channel by pasting a Slack incoming webhook URL, under Add channel › Paste a Slack webhook URL.

How to remove it

In SEOComet: open Alerts, find the Slack channel under Where, open its menu and choose Delete channel. SEOComet stops posting and deletes the webhook address it stored. To pause alerts instead, turn the channel off.

In Slack: open Tools & settings › Manage apps, choose SEOComet and press Remove app. Slack then revokes the webhook, so nothing more can be posted. Delete the channel in SEOComet as well; if you don’t, its deliveries fail, and after 10 failures in a row SEOComet turns the channel off.

What SEOComet stores

When you add SEOComet to Slack, Slack gives us three things, and we keep them with the alert channel:

  • The name of the Slack workspace
  • The name of the channel you picked
  • The incoming webhook URL Slack issued for that channel

They’re encrypted in our database. SEOComet asks Slack for one permission, incoming-webhook, which lets it post to that one channel. It doesn’t read messages, members or files, and it can’t post anywhere else. Slack’s reply also carries an access token; we don’t keep it.

The privacy policy covers the rest of what SEOComet stores and who else handles it.

Help
