What to do during a core update
What Google itself suggests, in short.
- Wait until Google says the update has finished. Rankings can move around while it rolls out.
- Then wait at least a full week before you compare, in Search Console, a stretch after it ended with a similar stretch before it started.
- Avoid quick fixes, like removing part of a page because you heard it was bad for SEO. Google says core updates are broad and don’t target specific sites or pages.
- If you lost ground, look at how the content could be more useful to readers. Google points to its guidance on helpful, reliable, people-first content, and says improvements can take months to show.
